Correspondence consists of personal and official correspondence and letters of others. The latter segment relate to official Navy matters. Pamphlets focus on Mark guns and torpedoes while books, etc. treat mines, infantry, and artillery. Journals and notebooks contain notes by Stanley on torpedoes, mines, and artillery. Registers, Navy yearbooks, and directories for 1920-1940 are part of the collection. Subject files contain information on diving, igniters, and torpedoes, while blueprints, etc. contain a blueprint of a ship and gyroscope. There are photographs of USS North Carolina, Naval Training Station Rifle Team and an unidentified torpedo boat. Miscellany houses certificates, clippings, programs and class lists.

Joseph N. Stanley, gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy, was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1876. He joined the Navy in 1892 and retired in 1920. He was employed by the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, RI from 1920 until 1937. He was active in civic affairs and died on July 8, 1968. From the description of Papers, 1898-1953.
